Happy Valentine’s Day to all! In honor of St. Valentine, it is a sheer delight to present to you this lovely little book of quotes from the Saints. No, not the football team from New Orleans!  I mean the team of priests, poets, teachers, and martyrs of all stripes who came before us and gave us the great gift of their pithy wisdom.

In this single volume, the love and intelligence of saints ancient and modern shine on every page, with one quote for each day of the year. Eddie Cotter, Jr., the founder of the aptly named Dead Theologians Society has compiled some of the best quotes from the early Church fathers, virgin martyrs, and popes. He has also included more modern saints and blesseds like Saint Josemaria Escriva, Fr. Solanus Casey, and Pier Giorgio Frassati.

Each daily quote is starkly printed with white letters on a black background, reminiscent of intertitles in silent movies. The dialogue or narration would be printed out so that people could follow the action. This is highly appropriate for this little book, as we can no longer hear these saints in person, but reading their words boldly printed makes it easier to imagine them actually speaking to us aloud.

There are so many wonderful quotes that it is hard to pick my favorites, but here is a small sampling:

“If men only knew what eternity is, they would do everything in their power to change their lives.” -Saint Jacinta Marto

“Religion is the science of saving souls.” -Blessed Solanus Casey

“I find consolation in the one and only friend who will never leave me, that is our Divine Savior in the Eucharist.” -Saint Damien of Molokai

“It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” -Saint Peter

“When you kneel before an altar, do it in such a way that others may be able to recognize that you know before whom you kneel.” -Saint Maximilian Kolbe

“It is not fitting when one is in God’s service, to have a gloomy face or a chilling look.” -St. Francis of Assisi

“Patience obtains all things.” -St. Teresa of Jesus (Teresa of Avila)

“Do whatever He tells you.” -Blessed Virgin Mary

This is the perfect book to gift for teen birthdays, sacraments, and special occasions. It is also a wonderful gift for people who have never heard of the Saints and their wisdom. It is hopeful and inspirational in equal measure. Without a doubt, it is one of the best books on the overflowing shelves of our Hobbit Hole.

For more information on this book and the Dead Theologians Society program for youth groups and young adults, visit www.deadtheologianssociety.com. DTS received canonical standing as a Private Association of the Faithful in 2015 and is headquartered in the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin. “Dead Theologians Society is a youth ministry program dedicated to enriching the faith of young Catholics through the lost art of storytelling. Our special charism is to pray for the Souls in Purgatory.” I can personally attest to the wonderful, intelligent, and caring nature of the DTS program, which benefits the youth of St. Patrick Church. Our church has been blessed with many vocations to the priesthood, holy marriages, and victorious singles who give their time, talent, and treasure to benefit as many people as possible.
And one more quote for teens, who need strength for the road that goes ever on and on…
“I will believe you for my future, chapter by chapter, until the story is written.” -St. Brendan the Navigator
